They have been steadfast in opposition to the spread of legalized sports betting, most recently with regard to New Jersey’s effort to resuscitate Atlantic City by following the Nevada “sports book” model. We will see this trend continue.
. It is time to legalize, regulate and tax it.
How will politicians react to Silver’s proposal? If President Obama likes the idea — he dutifully fills out his bracket each March on the NCAA basketball tourney — then for sure the Republican majorities will oppose any change in the law. They should come prepared with an answer.
There can be little question that sports gambling is a vice — much like drinking and playing the lottery. No one has suggested that this fact of the sporting life be abolished, even if it were possible. We are now experimenting with legalizing marijuana for recreational use.
What then are the chances that the other sports leagues and the politicians will go along with Adam Silver’s proposal? In the short run, I would not bet on it.
Gambling on sporting events is legal throughout most of the world.
Adam Silver’s approach calls for federal legislation that would allow states to decide whether they would authorize sports gambling. The sports establishment is vigilant in protecting the integrity of the product, and it will remain so if gambling is legalized, regulated and taxed.
We have entered a new phase of American history where some folks have begun to realize that prohibiting certain vices is foolish or just ineffective. Few turn on the games, especially football, without knowing the betting line. So far, the Rocky Mountain high has not caused Denver to rise about its mile limit. Were this to be enacted, state sports gambling would spread like the lottery. Once the states impose their regulations and their taxation on this activity, gambling on professional sports in America will be universal.
Gambling on professional sports will go on whatever we do. To recognize the reality that hundreds of billions of dollars are bet annually — and illegally — on sports is an enormous breakthrough even if the NBA is the only sport to recognize the fact. What Silver has done is to present the issue for public discussion.

We now await input from the commissioners of the football, baseball and hockey leagues. For some, the greatest joy comes from gambling on the uncertain outcomes of these contests. However, we have passed the point of trying to decide whether gambling on sports provides some sort of benefit to society. The availability of gambling online makes that easy to accomplish.
NBA Commissioner Adam Silver’s op-ed in the New York Times calls upon Congress to change the nation’s laws to adopt a federal framework that allows states to authorize betting on professional sports. Adam Silver is right. At the same time, all team sports have discovered the marketing advantages of adopting fantasy games, some of which approach sports gambling when a participant can chose a new team each week. It is a courageous position for a sports commissioner to take. Alcohol continues to cause much more harm to society than illegal narcotics, but we learned the hard way that Prohibition generated far more problems than it solved. Perhaps fair-minded individuals will see the proposal for what it is — an effort to respond to reality and minimize some of the unfortunate consequences of having to place bets with a bookie in violation of the law. There is no reason to think that were Congress to give its consent in a fairly short period of time we would see a “sports book” in almost every jurisdiction. Of course, gambling depends upon the games remaining unfixed. I would be surprised if the other commissioners follow Silver’s lead, but they will be asked. Only five states do not have a state lottery, but even some of those states have casino gambling. Professional sports think that gambling means that their games will not be decided on the merits, that fixers will invade their enterprises and cause spectators and fans to lose interest in patronizing their entertainment businesses. It is ubiquitous
You need a system – either one that you come up with yourself over time – or one that someone else has come up with over time. In either case, the system has to be tried and true, not something that your buddy’s brother in law thought up over beers at a backyard BBQ.
If you’re losing more than you’re winning at the dog track, maybe it’s time to step back and take a long, hard look at your handicapping method. The only way you can consistently pick winners at the dog track is by watching thousands of races, noticing what crucial factors indicate that a dog is ready to perform in THIS particular race, and then betting the race the right way.
There are books on greyhound handicapping. There are greyhound handicapping forums on the Net. There’s just no reason to keep losing with all the information that’s out there. And if you’re not using a method, then it’s definitely time to think about what you do when you go to the track.
Einstein said, “Insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result.” That’s what you’re doing when you keep making the same mistakes over and over at the track, picking numbers or listening to other people or depending on luck to help you pick dogs.. So, if you want to win consistently, improve your handicapping skills and put some time and effort into learning the craft of greyhound handicapping.
Betting without planning is a fool’s game, although even the best handicappers slip into it once in awhile. But if you’re not getting any better at handicapping, even after many trips to the track, consider listening to Albert Einstein.
Greyhound handicapping is a very difficult art. Greyhounds don’t have jockeys, so once they get out onto the track, it’s all instinct, speed and running smarts. But if it’s more than once in awhile for you, it’s pretty certain that you’ll lose more than you win and that’s no fun.
So, if you want to win consistently, you have to handicap consistently. There are all kinds of systems and methods that you can buy that can help you pick winners.
If that sounds like what you’re doing and you’re going home with a fatter wallet than you went with, give yourself a pat on the back and keep doing what you’re doing

If the wagers on each outcome are made in ratio to the implied odds, then the bookmaker is guaranteed a profit (balanced book).
Aside from simple wagers (for example, betting a friend $20 that one’s favorite baseball team will win its division), sports betting is commonly performed through a bookmaker (bookie) or through various online Internet outlets. In general, most sportsbooks will prefer this type of wager due to the low win-probability, and also the longer period of time in which the house holds the player’s money while the bet is pending.

Sportsbetting has resulted in a number of scandals in sport, such as the 1919 World Series, the alleged (and later admitted) illegal gambling of former MLB player Pete Rose, and former NBA referee Tim Donaghy, effecting the integrity of sports events through various acts including “point shaving” (players effecting the score by missing shots), bad calls from officials at key moments, and overall match fixing (“the fix is in”).
In areas where sports betting is illegal, bettors usually make their sports wagers with illicit bookmakers (known colloquially as “bookies”) and on the Internet, where thousands of online bookmakers accept wagers on sporting events around the world. Prediction – 4th Big East: The Knights have the chance to be the surprise team in the Big East this season, but a lot will depend on the production they get out of the offensive line and the newcomers on the defensive side of the ball. Ncaa Basketball Predictions 2011
The Scarlet Knights figure to be strong up front on the defensive side of the ball, as they return three of four starters to a defense that allowed just 103 yards per game on the ground. Ncaa Basketball Predictions 2011
Ncaa Basketball Predictions 2011
The Scarlet Knights also bring back one of the top running backs in the Big East in junior Joe Martinek, who ran for a team best 967 yards and nine touchdowns as a sophomore. Look for sophomore De’Antwan Williams to be more of a factor this season, after rushing for 235 yards and one score as a true freshman.
At linebacker the Scarlet Knights will have to find a new starter at both middle linebacker and on the strong side, as the only returning starter to this unit is senior weak-side linebacker Antonio Lowery. Sophomore Steve Beauharnais looks to have the early edge in the middle, while junior Manny Abreu figures to step at the open weak-side linebacker spot.
There is no question that the Scarlet Knights are loaded with young talent at the skill positions, but none of that will really matter if the offensive line doesn’t produce. It looks like red-shirt freshman Darrell Givens will get the first crack at replacing McCourty, as he is projected to step in and start opposite of junior David Rowe. The Knights do have road games against four of the top teams in the Big East, as they must travel to take on Pitt, USF, Cincinnati, and West Virginia. Savage has already earned a spot atop the top quarterbacks in the Big East, and you have to believe he is only going to put up better numbers in his second season.
After finishing 9-4 in 2009, the Rutgers Scarlet Knights enter 2010 off five straight winning seasons. Sanu was also a big factor in the running game, with 348 yards and five more touchdowns. Junior Eric LeGrand and sophomore Scott Vallone return at the two starting defensive tackle spots, and they also get back two talented players on the outside in senior defensive ends Jonathan Freeny and Alex Silvestro.
Quarterback Tom Savage made the 2009 Freshmen All- American team after throwing for 2,211 yards with a solid 14-7 touchdown to interception ratio.
At wide receiver the Scarlet Knights will have to replace Tim Brown, who had a monster senior season with 1,150 yards and nine touchdowns. We will find out just how good this kid is in 2010, as the Scarlet Knights have to reload up front on the offensive line. The front runner to step in and have a big season for the Scarlet Knights on the outside is sophomore Mohamed Sanu, who finished up 2009 with 51 catches for 639 yards and three touchdowns. At tight end sophomore DC Jefferson returns, and figures to make a much bigger impact in his second season as a starter.
The Scarlet Knights lost one of the top corners in the country in Devin McCourty, and there is no question they will struggle to replace his production. Here is a quick preview of what the Scarlet Knights will look like this season, plus my prediction on where they finish the year in the Big East. Despite the strong finish in 2009 the Knights were just 3-4 in conference play, a big disappointment for a team that was picked by a lot of experts to win the Big East last season. Ncaa Basketball Predictions 2011
. The Knights bring back starting strong safety Joe Lefeged, and he figures to be one of the top safeties in all of the Big East this season. The Scarlet Knights will return just 12 starters for the 2010 season, but with another relatively easy non-conference schedule I wouldn’t be surprised to see the Knights finish with a winning record again in 2010. The rest of the Big East teams better beat the Knights while they can, as this team is primed to be one of the top teams in the conference in 2011 and 2012 with so many young playmakers on the offensive side of the ball. The Scarlet Knights will send two new young players into the starting lineup this season, in red-shirt freshman Brandon Coleman and sophomore Tim Wright. The Knights do bring back one of the top left tackles in the conference in junior Art Frost, but there are plenty of holes that need to be filled before the season gets underway
PredictIt had Trump’s odds of winning the nomination at 76 percent early on Wednesday, down 4 points from Monday’s record high of 80 percent.
Message boards associated with PredictIt featured growing discussion of a possible brokered convention, which can occur when no candidate has won a clear majority of delegates before the start of the party’s nominating convention.
Ladbrokes PLC said on Wednesday morning that Trump’s odds of securing the nomination were 1-5. Rubio came in a distant second at 9-2, followed by Cruz at 25-1.
Other online betting venues also gave Trump, a New York billionaire businessman, the strongest odds of winning the nomination. SAP had no editorial involvement in its creation or production.

Cruz has gained 4 percentage points in the past two days and his predicted chances stood at the highest level on the site since he tumbled to a record low after a weak showing in the South Carolina primary on Feb 20.

“I am betting against Trump getting the nomination at these odds but only because I think there is a 30 percent chance the GOP elite somehow successfully blocks him at the convention,” said a post from a forum member with the username matthewcooley.
Betting volumes on both Trump and Cruz hit records for the candidates on Tuesday and Rubio’s volume was his second highest ever.
Rubio, who scored his first win in a nominating contest on Tuesday with the Minnesota Republican caucuses, dropped 1 point to 10 percent, a record low for him.

This is no longer the issue of money when teenagers excessively monitor sports results or become overly excited at the outcome of sports events. The following points convey some signs that your son or daughter may have a gambling problem:
Although Joseph McNamarra writes for http://www.gambling-portal.com which is a guide to online gambling, he was shocked to find that his son suffered from adolescent gambling. These acts are usually followed by aggression and loss of control as repeated unsuccessful efforts to put their lives back on track.

When your child loses interest in other activities he once enjoyed and is preoccupied with gambling-related activities, this is another warning sign of adolescent gambling problem. They interpret the meaning of the word gambling as entertainment or a challenge and it is your job as a parent to teach your children the real value of gambling.
Parents often feel that they know their children very well and that any visible sign indicating the smallest problem will immediately receive full attention and treatment, however, it is not always the case. Teenagers become hostile towards their family members and friends so they would not have to deal with their problems. Developing a trusting relationship with your children, balancing their need for independence with your need to monitor their attitudes and behaviors related to gambling is a good start, but if you think the problem is severe, seek professional assistance.
Children tend to tell occasional lies to their parents when they feel stressed or try to conceal something, but when these lies become inconsistent on a daily basis, it is a symptom indicating bigger issues. In the same way that you have provided guidance on important issues in the past, you can influence your children about gambling. Even the most caring parent not always has the ability to check whether his child prepares his homework or engages in gambling activities.
Gambling Addiction: How To Identify Your Child Has A Gambling Problem
by: Joseph McNamarra
. Our parents grew up thinking that gambling was wrong, but our children are growing up with gambling is as easy as going to McDonald’s. Since, he has involved himself in helping other parents prevent this addiction in their children.
Parents should acknowledge the fact that not all people who engage in gambling activities are compulsive gamblers. This is the right time and place for the parent to interfere and to do what ever it takes to discover the source of the problem in order to find appropriate tools for its treatment.
When your child develops drastic changes in academic performance and spends a lot of time browsing the internet, you have every right to question his motives. Since not all teenagers work after school or have the ability to work, parents convey the primary financial source of all the necessities. Unfortunately, parents are not some super heroes with special powers because in most of the cases even a healthy communication within the family is not sufficient to detect a problematic behavior on time. In more severe cases, adolescences commit illegal acts in order to finance gambling habits. For the first time in history, gambling is available close to home and now even inside of teenagers’ rooms. Responsible parents, who keep track of banking accounts, usually know the exact amount of MP3 players or cell phones their sun or daughter have, what simplifies the “counting” process.

Mood swings and intolerance characterize typical adolescent behavior due to physical and mental changes, but when gambling controls these mood swings, it destroys any acceptable lines of healthy behavior.
Gambling problems are no longer the trademark of adult addictive behavior; on the contrary, it is becoming an increasingly widespread and damaging social and health problem around adolescents. Teenagers use money for gambling that was intended for something else or bet money they do not even have. This article provides some useful keys to help parents in early identification of gambling compulsion.
Missing personal belongings or inability to cover regular expenses, which later on develops into borrowing money from family members or friends for gambling purposes communicate another warning sign of gambling addiction. Carib ruled the roost season at 93-66-9, 58.5 percent, +18.55 units after ABC held the penthouse spot in the 2007-08 season.
So what exactly is reverse line movement? RLM takes place when a large majority of bets are on one team, yet the line moves in the opposite direction. Last year was a good RLM season for NFL sports betting (45-29, 60.8 percent, +11.91), but two sportsbooks that were in the top five in NFL RLM in both seasons.
By: Manny G
College Basketball sports betting was not too shabby either, with a two-year mark of 492-356-22, 58.0 percent, +91.96 units. Another important recommendation is to use a slow moving (but reliable) sportsbook. This would make Miami +6 the RLM play.
So what causes RLM when the aim of most sportsbooks is to get as close to balanced action on both sides as possible? The answer to this is quite simple: the sharp bettors; the one’s who give sports betting advice. The huge problem with this is that the nfl line, ncaaf line or nhl line may have moved too much by that time, and all of the value has been sucked out of the unpopular side.
The highest two-year winning percentage using RLM from the top five books belongs to College Football, which went 480-341-10, 58.5 percent, +95.10 units. However, instead of the line rising as you might expect, it instead drops to Chargers -6. Keep a close eye on Canbet here, as that Australian sportsbook cracked the top five both years.
So what we recommend is to only use the top five each season for each individual sport (in terms of units won). Keep an eyes on the top five sportsbooks at Sports Insights though, as NCAAF sports betting has been very liquid in that regard, with only one sportsbook (believe it or not, Bodog) finishing in the top five both years.
Also, games where over 60 percent of the public are on one side, yet there is reverse line movement of at least 10 cents on the Money Line from the opening number at the top five sportsbooks in MLB and NHL sports betting has also been profitable. This may enable you to get the stale more favorable sports betting line at the time the reverse line movement hits at the triggering Sportsbook. All of this will be fun to follow (not to mention profitable) when every sport except baseball are going on simultaneously during the winter months.
To back this up, our friends over at Prosportsonline.net have tracked the records for games where over 60 percent of the public has been on one side, yet there was reverse line movement of at least one full point from the opening number at the top sportsbooks in NFL, NCAAF, NBA and NCAAB. The proper way to make a sports bet using reverse line movement is to place your bet as soon as there is an RLM of one full point (or 10 cents in MLB and NHL) off of the opening line. This is where an important word of caution is in order though. Sure, using this approach leaves open the possibility of the line turning around and moving back against you, but as you will see in bit, betting as soon as an RLM qualifies has been profitable in every major North American sport such as the last two seasons, so if one line turns around, so be it. We tracked the top five books for each of the pointspread sports for the last two years, as as you can see, this strategy has been profitable in every sport. To illustrate, let us say that San Diego Chargers open at -7 over the Miami Dolohins, and over 70 percent of the sports bets placed on the game are on San Diego. The records quoted below are based on the bets being made at the triggering books, so beating the move by a half-point or a few cents now and then would actually make your record even better.
Thus, following reverse line movements is the same thing a following the smart money. RLM takes place when more money/ sportsbook picks are bet by the small percentage of bettors that are on the unpopular side (the sharps) than is bet by the huge majority of players betting the popular side (the squares). Furthermore, they list the RLM records for many individual sportsbook, making it easy to spot which books this system is working at and which books it may be best to ignore.
NBA sports betting has the lowest two-year five-book RLM winning percentage among the 11/10 sports, but then again, every gambler in the world would kill to go 382-301-9, 55.9 percent, +48.90 units, and the 57.5 percent win rate this past season is nothing to sneeze at.
Now do the sharps win every single time? Absolutely not! However, they are right more often than they are wrong, so being on the same side as the sharps is a prudent strategy over the long run, and again, the best thing is that there in absolutely no conventional sports handicapping necessary..
prosportsonline.net. It should be noted that many fewer MLB games have qualified so far this season (is the whole world using RLM now?), but smaller profits is still profit.Again, these records are for Money Lines only and do not include totals. Finally, NHL sports betting has picked up 148.49 units in two years, and unlike MLB, NHL had four sportsbooks out of the top five gain double-digit units this past season. Note that these records are for sides only and do not include totals.
The NFL sports betting is generally considered the toughest sport to beat, yet blindly following this method produced an exceptional 59.2 percent win rate last season, improving the two year record to 328-249-12, 56.8 percent, +59.06 units. Keep in mind that NCAAB was the most liquid sport in terms of top-five sportbooks however, with not a single sportsbook making the top five both years. Quite a few RLM followers watch the moves until almost game time, and then bet accordingly
The Italian rider got the record-breaking day underway with a win on the aptly named three-year-old colt, Wall Street.
Despite the 2,000,000-1 odds, every horse won, granting the gambler a whopping $1.5 million windfall.
He became the first person in Britain to win £1 million ($1.5 million) in a betting shop.
Packer, who had an estimated fortune of $6.7 billion at the time of his death in 2005, was a legendary figure on the track who struggled to find individual bookmakers with enough money to take him on.
Murphy placed the wager online three months before the race, giving him greater odds — and greater returns — than those betting on the day.
The huge windfall helped finance his lifelong ambition of working as a trainer in Louisville, home of the prestigious Kentucky Derby, he told British newspaper The Telegraph.

The biggest loser
A Dream Come True
From humble beginnings as a bookmaker, McManus earned a reputation as the fearless man on the track who would take on any wager — no matter how big.
“He’s an absolute legend.
“The atmosphere in the winners’ enclosure was amazing,” Nick Smith, head of public relations at Ascot, told CNN.
“We actually had champagne for him after the sixth win, and then after the seventh the whole place just erupted.”
Five years later, Ascot erected a lifesize bronze statue of the jockey at the entrance of the famous racecourse, in honor of his historic wins.
It’s become one of the fabled wins in horse racing history — and the elusive dream that lingers in the back of every punter’s mind.
Nicknamed the “Sundance Kid” for his bold gambling, McManus famously won $1.3 million in just one day at Cheltenham in 2006, in series of wagers with similarly daring bookmaker “Fearless” Freddie Williams.
As Cheltenham wraps up for another year on Friday, CNN’s Winning Post takes a look at five of the most incredible horse racing betting stories of all time.
In 1996, jockey Frankie Dettori left bookmakers in tears after defying 25,000-1 odds of winning all seven races at Britain’s Ascot Festival.
In the late 1980s a consortium of Sydney bookmakers joined forces to accept Packer’s awesome bets, which could be around $5 million on a single race.
But the bookmakers were rubbing their hands at Sydney’s Golden Slipper Stakes in 1987 when Packer lost around $7 million throughout the day — including $2 million on his own horse, called Christmas Tree — reported Melbourne newspaper The Age.

For a legendary gambler who thinks nothing of betting a million dollars on one horse, Irish businessman JP McManus is by all accounts a surprisingly reserved man.
It started with a horse called Isn’t That Lucky and ended with one called A Dream Come True, for one lucky punter from Yorkshire in Britain.
In 2008, the unnamed man placed just 75 cents on eight horses winning in an accumulator bet, said the BBC.
One lucky punter, Darren Yeats, placed a £59 ($89) accumulator bet on all of Dettori’s races — despite being warned off by his wife.
But the bold gamble paid off and Yeats left the track £550,000 ($830,000) richer.
Described as the “Olympics of jumps racing,” more than $820 million is bet during the four-day festival, with many punters taking their lead from the almost-mythical McManus.
“McManus is a legendary figure because of how brave he is,” Ladbrokes bookmaker David Williams says. . “He’s one of those faces that when he walks into a betting ring, everyone is wondering what he’s going to do.
“But you’d never believe he’s such a big, brazen better — he’s very polite, very unassuming, a real gentlemen.”
But Murphy happily proved the skeptics wrong, scooping $1.5 million in an accumulator — a single bet which relies on all horses winning.
The Irishman could have been accused of letting his heart rule his head when he bet $75 on all five of his boss’s horses winning.
Australian media tycoon Kerry Packer wasn’t known as “The Big Fella” of gambling for nothing, famously halving betting odds in a matter of minutes with his million-dollar wagers.
It was a rare victory for the thoroughbred, who won just 10 of his 62 races.
This time last year, 29-year-old Conor Murphy was a stable boy — until one lucky bet at Cheltenham changed his life forever.
If ever there was an opportunity to step back in time and place a bet, it would surely be on the Kentucky Derby’s 1913 winner Donerail.
The three-year-old colt remains the highest odds winner in the history of the race, placed at 91-1, said the Kentucky Derby Museum.
One hundred years ago, those putting $2 on Donerail would have collected $184.90 in winnings. He’s got balls of steel when it comes to placing bets,” says Barry Orr, spokesman for Betfair, the world’s biggest online betting exchange. Now worth an estimated $1 billion, the 62-year-old property mogul and horse owner was a big player at this week’s Cheltenham Festival — one of the biggest betting events in the Britain. By today’s standards, it’s roughly the equivalent of placing a $46 bet and getting $4,300 back.
Surprise winner Donerail pulled away at the last stretch, setting a new track record with a time of two minutes and four seconds, beating his nearest rival by half-a-length
They feel like they’ve got no life,” said Augie Mendoza, associate director of sports for the YMCA of the USA. “Are you just going to deal with it for one summer and teach your kid to get through these hard times? Or are you going to have a confrontation every time you go to the field? Or are you going to have your kid quit?”
In Ridgewood, concern about burnout and driving kids too hard led community leaders to ban extracurricular activity for one Tuesday night each March — no practices, no games. What the coach called “strategy,” he called cheating.
“A lot of it comes out of the personal frustrations that parents feel in their own lives,” Dresser said. The end product, “Rounding Third,” hits on themes resonating today, as children join a dizzying number of sports teams under pressure to not merely win, but to please parents and coaches, earn college scholarships or, least likely of all, become a professional.
On Memorial Day, such perspective came into play for Dresser and his son, whose team — Hastings-on-Hudson — lost in the Little League playoffs to Port Chester.
Dresser said he was surprised to learn that, as a coach, he was a little like Mike and Don.
“If it’s all about winning, that kid could be in for a long summer, a negative summer and may end up never playing again,” said Perri, who works at Morristown (New Jersey) High School.
Learning how to win — and lose
That message is central to Dresser’s play, which has appeared off-Broadway and in regional productions.
About 75 percent of children give up organized sports by age 12, according to a research group.
At the play’s end, Mike — the one who just wants to nurture the kids — comes to a similar conclusion.
The play, inspired by his son’s former coach, features Don, a coach consumed by his desire to win, and Mike, a coach who thinks having fun should be the goal.
Her coach was not only tough, but never let her pitch — choosing instead to put his own daughter in the game, Brittany said. Prompted by a certain signal, they would not only slide when trying to advance to the next base, but afterwards pretend to be injured, an apparent attempt to circumvent Little League rules restricting use of pinch runners.
His parents, Craig and Sarah Welence, grew somewhat concerned and decided to ask Tyler not to play soccer last fall.
“Sometimes, I just didn’t want to go because it was too cold and I was tired or something,” Tyler said.
The more Richard heard, the angrier he got. What can you say when you play that well?” Dresser said.
“I learn really unpleasant things like I really want to win … I want the kids to have fun, but it’s more fun to win than to lose,” Dresser said with a laugh.

Another reason for burnout, according to sports observers, relates to the fact that U.S. “Parents could learn from the kids, they really could.”
Outside pressuresSports keep Tyler Welence, 12, and his brother Riley, 9, and their parents busy year-round. The stakes are just a lot higher than they used to be.”
Experts cite this mentality as one reason many children give up on sports at an early age. I actually believe we should be teaching kids how to win — how to try to win, at least.”
How will the Welences decide if Tyler and their other son, 9-year-old Riley, overdo it?
While winning might be more fun, he says, losing can be more valuable in the long run.
Brittany Perri, 14, has felt that stress. That’s what life is: You deal with a lot of disappointment … Still, for many of the other 364 days, the Welences and millions of others like them spend hours each day on the road and on the field.
(PORT CHESTER, New York) — Sam Dresser, 10, came home confused from his Little League baseball practice and told his father, Richard, about his coach’s plan to score a run.
Competition can tax time, patience and integrity

“I talked to [Sam] a little bit. “That’s honest,” said Dresser. When run properly, sports experts and child psychologists say organized athletics can also help build character and boost confidence.
Kathy Perri now does homework herself — checking out the coaches before Brittany, her only child, joins any team — and encourages other parents to do the same.
“When it completely overtakes the family, then it would be too much,” Sarah Welence said.
“It gives young people an opportunity to learn about themselves,” Petipas said. In some places, 3-year-olds join t-ball, soccer and other athletic leagues.
“It’s hard enough when you’re making errors and you’re trying to do your best. So you lose a game — there’s always another one,” said Sarah Welence. The greatest pressure, she says, came from her coach.
In many cases, the biggest challenges are putting the games into perspective and finding balance — between sports and school, playing hard and playing dirty, winning and losing.

Tyler says sports has helped him learn to accept that “life isn’t always fair,” while Riley says he’s absorbed his coaches’ advice not to get too down. “But I think our culture emphasizes winning so much that [if] people that don’t win, it’s like, ‘Why do I do it?’”
A full fill of sports
For 12-year-old Tyler Welence of Ridgewood, New Jersey, the issue was not necessarily winning, but having enough time to play as many as four sports a year.
That does not mean he’s been taking it easy. “Kids have an opportunity to get immediate feedback on what they do on a regular basis.”
Youth sports can breed confidence and teamwork, as well as frustration if excess pressures come to bear.
That’s just one of the many lessons children can get out of sports, said Dr. Your life will be a lot better if you know how to deal with that.”
Many student athletes, as well as their parents, say their athletic experience has taught them valuable lessons about teamwork, commitment, hard work, even disappointment. “They end up getting burned out.”. “You really have a choice,” Kathy Perri recalled. According to “Fair Play,” the name of a book and National Football-sponsored outreach group, more than 75 percent of children quit organized sports by the age of 12.
“There’s nothing wrong with wanting to win,” said Dan Gould, director of the Institute for the Study of Youth Sports. And then you have to come into the dugout and have a coach say, ‘If you make one more error, then I am going to take you out of the game,’” Perri said.
Many leagues — particularly those requiring extensive regional, national and international travel — are increasingly competitive and demanding, a trend that often corresponds with heightened pressures from adults.
But the playwright also saw an opportunity to spin this tale of adults putting winning above integrity. The following is a sample weekend schedule for the family — one representative of the time pressures many sports-centered family’s face:
